The Mg II λ2797, λ2803 emission in low-metallicity star-forming galaxies from the SDSS⋆

چکیده
We present 65 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra of 62 star-forming galaxies with oxygen abundances 12 + log O/H ∼ 7.5–8.4. Redshifts of selected galaxies are in the range z ∼ 0.36–0.70. This allows us to detect the redshifted Mg ii λ2797, λ2803 emission lines. Our aim is to use these lines for the magnesium abundance determination. The Mg ii emission was detected in ∼2/3 of the galaxies. We find that the Mg ii λ2797 emission-line intensity follows a trend with the excitation parameter x = O2+/O that is similar to that predicted by CLOUDY photoionised H ii region models, suggesting a nebular origin of Mg ii emission. The Mg/O abundance ratio is lower by a factor ∼2 than the solar ratio. This is probably the combined effect of interstellar Mg ii absorption and depletion of Mg onto dust. However, the effect of dust depletion in selected galaxies, if present, is small, by a factor of ∼2 lower than that of iron.

Context. We present 8.2m VLT spectroscopic observations of 28 H II regions in 16 emission-line galaxies and 3.6m ESO telescope spectroscopic observations of 38 H II regions in 28 emission-line galaxies. These emission-line galaxies were selected mainly from the Data Release 6 (DR6) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) as metal-deficient galaxy candidates. Aims. We collect photometric and high...
متن کامل1 0 Ju l 2 00 9 The Aromatic Features in Very Faint Dwarf Galaxies
We present optical and mid-infrared photometry of a statistically complete sample of 29 very faint dwarf galaxies (Mr > −15 mag) selected from the SDSS spectroscopic sample and observed in the mid-infrared with Spitzer IRAC. This sample contains nearby (redshift z . 0.005) galaxies three magnitudes fainter than previously studied samples. We compare our sample with other star-forming galaxies t...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملEmission-line diagnostics of low-metallicity active galactic nuclei
Current emission-line-based estimates of the metallicity of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at both high and low redshifts indicate that AGN have predominantly solar-to-supersolar metallicities. This leads to the question: do low-metallicity AGN exist? In this paper, we use photoionization models to examine the effects of metallicity variations on the narrow emission-lines from an AGN. We explore ...
متن کاملMetallicities and Physical Conditions in Star-forming Galaxies at Z∼1.0-1.5
We present a study of the mass-metallicity (M-Z) relation and H II region physical conditions in a sample of 20 star-forming galaxies at 1.0 < z < 1.5 drawn from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey. We find a correlation between stellar mass and gas-phase oxygen abundance in the sample, and compare it with the one observed among UV-selected z ∼ 2 star-forming galaxies and local objects from the Sl...
